Stanhope Silver Band is a historic British brass band with deep roots in Weardale and a lasting connection to its community. We are proud to be a musical heartbeat for Stanhope and the wider County Durham area, bringing people together through live music.
Why a “Silver” Band?
People often ask why we are called a “silver” band when we play brass instruments. In the British banding tradition, there is no difference in the instruments themselves. A silver band is simply a brass band whose instruments have been electro-plated in silver. Historically, this was an expensive process, and playing on silver instruments was a powerful symbol of a band’s prestige, competition success, and the financial backing of its community.
Our History
Formed in 1823, Stanhope Silver Band is widely recognised as one of the oldest brass bands in continuous existence in the country.
Our history is deeply intertwined with the industrial and cultural heritage of the North East. Through periods of profound change, world wars, and the evolution of the local mining and quarrying industries, the band has remained a continuing presence. We have a long and proud tradition of marching in local parades, performing at community gatherings, and representing our community at the historic Durham Miners’ Gala.
The Band Today
Today, Stanhope Silver Band is a dynamic and welcoming group of musicians of all ages and backgrounds. While we deeply respect our historical roots and traditional brass band repertoire, our musical library is constantly expanding. We regularly perform a diverse array of music, including:
- Standard brass band classics
- Selections from stage and screen
- Contemporary pop and rock arrangements
- Original compositions for brass
We maintain a busy schedule throughout the year, performing at local fetes, summer bandstand concerts, remembrance services, and festive events during the Christmas season.
Join the Tradition
A brass band is only as strong as its community. We are always looking to welcome new members into the fold.
Whether you are a seasoned cornet player looking for a new musical home, a returning musician wanting to dust off your instrument, or an adult beginner just picking up an instrument for the very first time, there is a seat for you here. We pride ourselves on offering a supportive, encouraging environment for players at all stages of their musical journey.
